Valvular Disease

“Damage to or a defect in one of the four heart valves”

  • Stenotic Valves → obstruct blood flow
  • Incompetent Valves → allow backflow of blood (regurgitation)

Abnormal flow associated with valve defects may cause turbulence → Heard as a murmur

Aetiology
  • Ageing
  • Congenital
  • Rheumatic valve disease – antibodies from Group A strep cross-react with antigens in heart, joints & other tissues and healing causes stenosis or incompetence in valves
  • Infective endocarditis – Strep viridans / Staph aureus which usually effects valves
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Damage following MI
  • Others
    • Myxoid degeneration
    • Rupture/dysfunction of papillary muscle
    • Dilation of valve rings
    • Aortic dissection
